Kappad Beach, Calicut - waves are calling for some much needed Vitamin ‘Sea’

Happiness is found in the warmth of family get‑togethers.
Some time ago, I had the delightful chance to attend a special celebration marking a milestone birthday of my beloved aunt. With the date, time, and venue carefully planned, our family members traveled from different corners of the country to gather at a charming resort by Kappad Beach. The festivities were filled with joy, laughter, and togetherness, making it a truly memorable occasion. Yet, what stood out most for me was an unplanned stroll along the serene Kappad shoreline—a simple, spontaneous moment that turned into an unforgettable experience. I look my best when I’m totally free, on a holiday and walking on the beach.

The Kappad beach is one of Kerala's highly tourist-attracted destinations due to its topography, is located 16 km away from Kozhikode is nestled away from the hustle-bustle of the city, which makes it an ideal beach holiday destination for relaxation. A very thrilling feature about the Kappad beach is the fascinating formation of rocks that protrudes into the sea. The beach landscape includes several coconut groves and long stretches of silvery sands drenched by lathered surf that soothingly rolls up and down the shores.

Locally known as Kappakkadavu, this pleasant stretch of rock-studded shoreline is one of the most charming beaches in the state of Kerala, India. The Kappad Beach has been mentioned in history as the gateway to the Malabar Coast, it was here that 170 men led by the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama sailed in on May 27, 1498 and then stepped into the state to create a new chapter in history, establishing a long socio-political relationship between India and Europe.

Due to its spices and wealth, the region also attracted other groups of people, including the Arabs, Greeks, Persians, Romans, Dutch and the English, which made Kappad as witness to many landings and Kozhikode the most important trade center of the Malabar region.

Today, there is only a little stone monument that is left at this beach to tell the story of its great historical importance. The inscription on it reads - ‘Vasco da Gama landed here, Kappadakavu, in the year 1498’.

Uncrowded and unspoiled, this picturesque place offers a bewitching experience to both local and foreign tourists. The beach can be described as a long stretch of pale-golden sands, surrounded by tall coconut palms and known for its natural beauty.

To reach this pristine slice of beach along the Malabar Coast, Calicut Airport is less than an hour inland. There are a good number of trains and buses to reach Calicut too. The best way to reach Kappad beach, for the visitors it is suggested to come through backwaters so that one can explore the beauty of nature. To stay, there are couple of beach resorts just 2-3 kms away from the Kappad Beach making it very easy to stroll in the beach in the cool mornings or to soak in the sunset by the waves in the evenings.

Kappad Beach is very calm and famous for its scenic beauty and tranquility. Staying near to a beach that’s clean, away from people who mess it up, and having members take care of the beach from time to time is what “maintaining” the beach means. After being consistent in keeping the beach and the environment clean, a national body of environmentalists & scientists have recommended eight beaches as clean beaches in India with the “Blue Flag Eco-Label”. Kappad has been well known as clean beach of India for awhile now.

Who doesn’t like to spend some time on a beach that’s clean, pleasant, and mesmerizing! Few may just be amazed by the nature, few may enjoy the rides on seawater, and many just have their own way of enjoying their moments on the beach. Nothing soothes the soul like a day by the water.

Crunchy Veggie salad with a thousand island dressing

A salad is one such dish which consists of small pieces of food mixed with a sauce. It may contain virtually any type of ready to eat food. What I like about salads is that we can be so creative with the ingredients which is based around a wide variety of foods like vegetables, fruits, cooked meat, eggs, nuts and leafy greens. Garden salads use a base of leafy greens like lettuce, arugula, kale or spinach; they are common enough that the word salad alone often refers specifically to garden salads.  Other types include Mexican bean salad, tuna salad, Lebanese fattoush, Greek salad, Thai Raw Papaya Salad and Japanese somen salad (a noodle-based salad). The sauce used to flavor a salad is commonly called a salad dressing; well-known types include Ranch, Thousand Island, Caesar and French vinaigrette. Salads can be served at any point during a meal such as an appetiser or side dish or as a main course.  Food historians tell us salads (generally defined as mixed green...

Triple Chocolate mousse

They say that no matter how old you grow, being with your siblings instantly takes you back to childhood. For me, growing up with my younger brother was one of the greatest adventures of my life. We laughed at the silliest things, fought endlessly over the TV remote, teamed up in countless rounds of Contra and Mario, rewatched our favorite movies until we knew every line, and savored delicious meals on our trips to the Gulf. He was, in fact, my very first “Foodie Buddy.” Though the years have passed and life has carried us to different continents, food remains our bond. Even today, amidst the hustle and bustle, our conversations often circle back to what we loved eating as kids and what delights us now. Back then, birthdays were simple—no grand cakes or parties, and we never felt the need. But today, we embrace every occasion with joy, no matter the distance. Whether near or far, we celebrate each other’s milestones with heartfelt gestures. When my brother celebrated his milestone birt...
