Kappad Beach - waves are calling for some much needed Vitamin ‘Sea’

Happiness is family get togethers. A while back I had a wonderful opportunity to be part of one such party to celebrate a milestone birthday of my dear aunt. The date was set, the time was set and the location was set. My family from different parts of the country gathered together at a lovely resort in the Kappad Beach. While the celebrations were joyous and all of us had a gala time at the resort; a spontaneous stroll at the Kappad beach was a wonderful experience for me. I look my best when I’m totally free, on a holiday and walking on the beach.

The Kappad beach is one of Kerala's highly tourist-attracted destinations due to its topography, is located 16 km away from Kozhikode is nestled away from the hustle-bustle of the city, which makes it an ideal beach holiday destination for relaxation. A very thrilling feature about the Kappad beach is the fascinating formation of rocks that protrudes into the sea. The beach landscape includes several coconut groves and long stretches of silvery sands drenched by lathered surf that soothingly rolls up and down the shores.

Locally known as Kappakkadavu, this pleasant stretch of rock-studded shoreline is one of the most charming beaches in the state of Kerala, India. The Kappad Beach has been mentioned in history as the gateway to the Malabar Coast, it was here that 170 men led by the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama sailed in on May 27, 1498 and then stepped into the state to create a new chapter in history, establishing a long socio-political relationship between India and Europe.

Due to its spices and wealth, the region also attracted other groups of people, including the Arabs, Greeks, Persians, Romans, Dutch and the English, which made Kappad as witness to many landings and Kozhikode the most important trade center of the Malabar region.

Today, there is only a little stone monument that is left at this beach to tell the story of its great historical importance. The inscription on it reads - ‘Vasco da Gama landed here, Kappadakavu, in the year 1498’.

Uncrowded and unspoiled, this picturesque place offers a bewitching experience to both local and foreign tourists. The beach can be described as a long stretch of pale-golden sands, surrounded by tall coconut palms and known for its natural beauty.

To reach this pristine slice of beach along the Malabar Coast, Calicut Airport is less than an hour inland. There are a good number of trains and buses to reach Calicut too. The best way to reach Kappad beach, for the visitors it is suggested to come through backwaters so that one can explore the beauty of nature. To stay, there are couple of beach resorts just 2-3 kms away from the Kappad Beach making it very easy to stroll in the beach in the cool mornings or to soak in the sunset by the waves in the evenings.

Kappad Beach is very calm and famous for its scenic beauty and tranquility. Staying near to a beach that’s clean, away from people who mess it up, and having members take care of the beach from time to time is what “maintaining” the beach means. After being consistent in keeping the beach and the environment clean, a national body of environmentalists & scientists have recommended eight beaches as clean beaches in India with the “Blue Flag Eco-Label”. Kappad has been well known as clean beach of India for awhile now.

Who doesn’t like to spend some time on a beach that’s clean, pleasant, and mesmerizing! Few may just be amazed by the nature, few may enjoy the rides on seawater, and many just have their own way of enjoying their moments on the beach. Nothing soothes the soul like a day by the water.

Alappuzha- Venice of the East.

That was our houseboat A couple of years back, Mr. Peter and I celebrated our wedding anniversary on a houseboat in the backwaters of Alappuzha. All that we wanted was to be away from the city and noise and all the hustle & bustle......moments which had just US !! It was a spontaneous trip.  I still remember that our anniversary was on a Saturday. Mr. Peter was busy with work at office and kids had school, so we couldn't take off on that Friday. Trains & flights were not available in accordance to our timings, so we took the bus on that Friday night from Bangalore. It was our kids'  first time on a long distance bus journey. And luckily they slept....no tantrums.  We reached Alappuzha around 8am. Our tour manager told us that we had to check in to the houseboat at 11 am at the Finishing Point. There was still a lot of time left before we could check in to the houseboat. So we hired an auto and asked him to take us around this little town of theirs.....for a

Goa....pack your bags for an extended vacation

Vagator Beach College days are the colourful days of our lives. And class trips and outings leave a memory in our hearts for a lifetime. In my senior year of college, we had been on a trip to Goa. This was around the time when a super hit Hindi movie - Dil Chahta Hai had released and was running successfully in the theatres for a long time. This movie was when I actually saw the beauty of Goa. I remember having a lot of fun with my friends on that trip....the beaches, the parties, the shopping, the food..... And when our trip was over, and when we got back home....I always had the urge to go back to Goa again. That's the kind of feeling that Goa leaves you with.  Goa is not the place that you visit once and cross off from your list. After the first visit it becomes an urge to go again and after the second, it might turn out to be a tradition! Famous for full moon beach rave parties, a hippie-run night market and the kind of laid-back tropical vibe that you can really

Ooty - A drive to the Queen of the Hills

To quote in the words of Dalai Lama - "Once a year, go someplace you've never been before".  School had closed for the summer and we haven't been anywhere for quite a long time.....and I've often felt that it is not good to keep a vacation waiting. The summer heat was really getting on to us and we needed a break.....and us being the splurge of the moment kinda people....we took a spontaneous decision to drive to Ooty, one of the most of the most beautiful hill stations in India, and hence also fondly referred to as the “Queen of Hill Stations”. From north to south, India is blessed with nature's most beautiful creations that turn the country into a heavenly abode for travellers.  One such pristine resort nestled at a height on Nilgiri Hills in South India is Ooty (Ootacamund).  This hill station has splendid green downs and lofty hills of extraordinary scenic beauty and is endowed with a salubrious climate. Located in the Western Ghats at a h
